Cozy Cabin Chic

January is putting me in the mood to think about warm and cozy rooms that aren't completely covered in old-fashioned red plaid woolly blanket material. 

I'm thinking about rough walls — exposed stone or wooden panels. (Scroll down in this post by Cote de Texas for a picture of the Cotswold Cabin from the movie The Holiday.)

Rich fabrics with great texture and feel (like the bedroom that's inspiring Coco Kelley this season).

And the kind of bright white daylight you get when the sun is reflecting off of snow outside.

Henredon's Room Planner

When you're choosing pieces for any room, but especially one with tight spaces or an unusual shape, the Henredon Room Planning tool can be a huge help.

It's a floor plan challenge because I live in a city apartment and space is somewhat limited. Plus, a lot of my bedroom walls are taken up with two large windows, two doors to other rooms, and a closet door.

Finding Fine Furniture

Furniture Times recently reported the results of a survey conducted jointly with HGTV. Consumers said that they're interested in quality furniture that will stand the test of time, rather than cheaply made or trendy pieces that will end up in the junk pile in just few years.

So, how do you know if a piece will stand the test of time?

One of my favorite tricks is to look for the manufacturer's name on Craigslist or other places that furniture is resold. Nobody calls their IKEA furniture "heirloom quality," but for quality brands like Drexel Heritage, Hickory Chair and even Henredon it's a different story. When you're buying a new piece, it's great to know that if you ever decide to sell, people will recognize the quality of the name just like you did.
